GHK-Cu is one of the most frequently referenced compounds in peptide research, and also one of the most frequently misdescribed. This page sets out what it actually is, how it is presented, and what its analytical documentation should tell you.

What GHK-Cu is

GHK is a naturally occurring tripeptide with the sequence glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine. It has a high binding affinity for copper(II) ions, and when bound the resulting complex is written GHK-Cu. The copper is not an additive or a contaminant; it is part of the molecule under study, which is why the material presents as a distinctly blue crystalline powder rather than the white cake typical of most lyophilised peptides.

Why it is studied

Research literature on GHK-Cu concentrates on three areas: its behaviour as a copper transport molecule, its interaction with extracellular matrix components, and its role in cellular signalling pathways. Because it occurs endogenously and its concentration in human plasma is reported to decline with age, a good deal of the published work is comparative rather than interventional.

It is worth being precise here. The bulk of what is written about GHK-Cu online concerns cosmetic topical formulations, which are a different product category with different concentrations and different regulatory treatment. Research-grade lyophilised GHK-Cu is not that product and the literature does not transfer cleanly between the two.

Presentation and reconstitution

Our GHK-Cu is supplied as a 50mg lyophilised vial. The blue colour is expected and is a function of the copper complex. A vial that has arrived white, patchy or partially collapsed is worth photographing before you proceed, as appearance is one of the few things you can assess without instrumentation.

How we verify purity

Every batch is assayed by an accredited external laboratory before it is released to the catalogue. Two methods do the work: HPLC establishes purity as a percentage of total peak area, and mass spectrometry confirms the molecular weight matches the intended sequence. A purity figure without a stated method, lab and batch number tells you very little, which is why we publish all four.

Our current GHK-Cu lot was independently assayed at 99.48% HPLC purity. That figure belongs to one specific batch, not to the compound in general, which is why the batch identifier appears on the vial label.

Handling and storage

Lyophilised peptide is supplied sealed under vacuum. Keep the unopened vial cool, dry and out of direct light. Handle only in a controlled laboratory setting with appropriate protective equipment, and record the batch identifier against any work you carry out so results remain traceable to the analysis that cleared the lot.
